Interview with Art Spectacular Curator
The curator for 2011 is Gabrielle Mactaggart - we asked her some questions to find out more about what's planned for this year's event, what she loves about art and what she loves about the Rotary Art Spectacular.
Tell us about your background in art?
My love of art began as a child when I would accompany my Father to visit Phillip Bacon Galleries on a Saturday Morning.
It was a wonderful environment like entering another world, he had amazing exhibitions and his old english sheepdog was there to greet you, he was nearly as big as me and very friendly. While the adults talked I walked around with the dog absorbing the art which I dont think the dog saw much of as being an old English sheep dog his huge shaggy fringe covered his eyes.
After school I studied Fashion design and worked as a designer in a little workers cottage in Paddington in a business called LIving with Linen, my role also encompassed interior design where part of the brief was often to advise clients on" what art they should buy,' This was fantastic because I could share my passion of art. I always respected my clients personal tastes and wants, but could often push their boundaries by introducing them to new artists and ideas.
One of these clients was Koen Rooijmans CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation who had previously built an art collection for KLM airlines. I worked with him to introduce art into the Brisbane airports corporate offices and then create an exciting Public Art portfolio in and around the retail precinct. Wishing to generate opportunity and support the local visual arts community all artists commissioned were from Queensland.
Are you an artist yourself?
Yes I am an artist myself and I believe most people have the potential to realise an artistic capability. Whether it be a traditional painting, creating a garden or making beautiful dishes, these are all forms of artistic expression.
What kind of art will be available for purchase?
We've had responses from some amazing artists working over a range of mediums. There is something for everybody's taste including traditional oils and watercolour paintings to sculptural pieces made from recycled timber.
Why did you choose to get involved in this event?
Queensland has so much artistic talent. Its so important to provide exhibition venues and events to showcase these talented artists. The Rotary Art Show is an art community event that brings together a diverse range of art practitioners, from professionals that dabble in their spare time to full time artists devoted to their craft.
My personal invovlement started with the role as one of last years judges. The fantastic venue of The Riverside Centre creates exposure for our artists from new and wider audiences and creates a focus on Queensland art today, while raising funds for worthy causes. The Art prizes will give artists a huge opportunity and make a huge difference. We really want to encourage our arts community, who enrich our lives so much.
Being in the CBD gives office workers a visual treat on their way to and from the work place. 5min early for a meeting - take a stroll around the exhibition and vote on the peoples choice award. This incidental engagement can transform the daily experience, enriching this experience. Good art enlivens and enlightens our lives.
